The water of Lake Provala and its link to the Danube

A lake that breathes with the Danube

No river flows into Provala. It is fed by rain, groundwater and the Danube, and loses water by evaporation and seepage (Turistički klub). The lake is linked to the river underground, so its level rises and falls with the Danube, at most about a metre apart (Bač vesti, Turizmopedija).

What the water is like

A test in 1995 rated the water first class, slightly alkaline (pH 8.5–8.6), with 7.1–10.1 mg/l of dissolved oxygen (Turistički klub). In hot summers algae grow more and the water becomes less clear (Turistički klub). “The water in the lake is clean,” says Stevan Adamović of the angling club “Šaran” (Bač vesti).

We have not found more recent public water-quality data. If you have any, please write to us.

Mind the depth

The first ten metres or so from the shore are shallow (Turizmopedija); then the bottom drops quickly, down to 19 m. There is no lifeguard (Vojvodina Travel).

How Lake Provala was formed

Provala formed when the Danube broke through an embankment near Vajska in a great flood: sources give 1924 or 1926, and the lake took its present shape after the 1965 flood.
